Sometimes you may notice that your dedicated server is running slowing than usual, or lagging a bit when trying to complete a process. There are a number of things that could be the cause of this, and it is relatively easy to fix.

If your dedicated server is using SATA hard drives, one of the first things to check is for disk fragmentation. To check disk fragmentation on a Windows dedicated server use the search function on Windows desktop and type "defag" [without the quotes]. If it has been awhile since you have run a defrag on your SATA hard drive(s) keep in mind that they can sometimes take several hours to complete, especially if the hard drive(s) are highly fragmented. If after checking you see that your hard drive(s) are highly fragmented you might want to schedule a DEFRAG to run when your server usually is not busy. Many clients find that the best time to run a DEFRAG is on a weekend. For clients using dedicated servers that have SATA hard drive(s) we recommend that they regularly defragment their hard drives, and Windows has a feature that will let you automatically schedule this to regularly run.

Another thing that can slow down a dedicated server is if you have too many processes running at the same time. You can check what processes are running in Windows through the Task Manager. You can reach the Task Manager in Windows using the search feature on the desktop, or by RIGHT clicking your mouse near the clock in the bottom right hand corner of your server desktop. Make sure you shut down any processes that you are not using and then restart Windows.

If you still notice server lag after performing the above steps it may be time to consider adding RAM to your dedicated server, or upgrading to a more powerful processor.
